What You Need To Know About Your Car

Nov 04 2009 by Courtney Messenbaugh

Yesterday, I told you about a study that found women aren’t as knowledgeable about their cars as they should be. Of course, we’re busy and don’t have a lot of time to devote to car care. However, with winter around the corner, now is a good time to make sure your car is running smoothly. The experts at Valvoline Instant Oil Change introduced me to a few good basic ideas to help women keep up with their car care.

According to Valvoline, you should:

• Read owner’s manual and learn how often your air filter needs to be changed.
• Learn how to check tire pressure (For a tire maintenance guide from our friends at Cars.com, click here).
• Know how to clean and replace your wiper blades.
• Keep an emergency kit in your car just in case things go really wrong.
• I’d also add that you should know how to change a tire. (For a refresher course, click here.)

Most importantly, make sure you’re changing your car’s oil regularly. For a little extra motivation, Valvoline recently came out with the Engine Guarantee program. This program guarantees your car’s engine for up to 300,000 miles if you enroll online at Engineguarantee.com and agree to get your oil changed every 3,000 miles at a Valvoline service station, which costs just under $40 a pop. Once you do that, Valvoline will cover engine repair expenses of up to $5,000, if failures occur. The only catch is you must enroll your car before it reaches 75,000 miles (all of you at 74,900 get yourselves to a Valvoline shop stat!), and the vehicle must be a 1990 model year or newer.

Or you can go to your local service station for an oil change. The important thing is to get your car’s oil changed regularly.

I know moms have too much to do and don’t want to add another thing to their lists, but learning a car’s ins and outs is important. After all, your car keeps your family safe when you’re on the go.
