The Verdict: Paul Newman Was One of Us
Oct 07 2008 by Courtney Messenbaugh
The great actor and philanthropist Paul Newman passed away last week and it seems only right that we should pay our respects. After all, he liked all of the things that we hold near and dear — kids, women and parents, and cars (duh!). So at the risk of being like the rest of the media (God forbid!), I’d like to offer up a few reasons why we’re saddened by this great man’s passing.
1. The obvious — he was a beautiful man. Even into his golden years, those blue eyes had a spark that could melt anyone’s heart.
2. Despite his fame and Hollywood success, he was married for 50 years to one woman, actress Joanne Woodward. He once said in an interview that equal parts lust and respect were the ingredients that made his marriage so successful. Now that’s a smart man.
3. He had six children of his own and dedicated much of his philanthropic efforts to children. He began the Hole in the Wall Camps, which are residential camps for seriously ill children that serve more than 13,000 kids worldwide every year, free of charge. He would often visit the camps and participate in activities with the children as if he were just another camp counselor. Through Newman’s Own, a multimillion-dollar food company, Newman donated more than $250 million in profits to thousands of charities.
4. He voiced the character of Doc Hudson, a retired racecar, in the animated movie ”Cars.” His acting helps keep our kids quiet on many a road trip and (hopefully) teaches them a life lesson about friendship.
5. How could we not love a man who loved cars so much??? Newman was a huge racing enthusiast. He competed in Sports Car Club of America events; several Le Mans events; the Trans-Am series; 24 Hours of Daytona; and the Baja 1000. He even co-owned his own racing team, Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing, and could often be seen at major race events throughout the world.
Simply put, he was a MotherProof kind of guy; may he rest in peace.

I have always admired Paul Newman for putting his money to work in such productive ways... i buy Newman’s Own stuff because it’s high quality stuff and the proceeds go to good causes
