Oprah Discusses Moms Driving Under the Influence
Oct 27 2009 by Kristin Varela
I recently wrote an article about an influx of moms driving under the influence, and the trend has caught talk-show host Oprah Winfrey’s attention, too.
Today, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” looks at moms who drive while drunk or high and focuses on Diane Schuler’s story. This summer, Schuler drove the wrong way down the Taconic State Parkway in New York and crashed into an oncoming SUV, killing the three adults inside it. Schuler, her 3-year-old daughter and her three nieces were also killed. Toxicology tests found that Schuler had both alcohol and marijuana in her system.
Winfrey talks to the private eye hired by Schuler’s husband, Daniel, to investigate the accident. She also speaks with a young girl who recounts her terrifying ride with another mom who was charged with drunken driving.
Almost all of us entrust our children’s vehicular safety to someone else from time to time: a carpooling mom, a nanny or a grandparent. We need to be aware of the potential dangers and what we can do to prevent our kids from being the next victims of a drunken driving accident. This is a show no parent should miss.
Head over to Oprah.com for more information about the Schuler tragedy and tips on how to spot potential signs of alcoholism.
