Of Muggles and Minivans: 2008 Town & Country Preview

Jul 26 2007 by Kristin Varela

2008 Chrysler Town&Country

Test drove: 7/15/2007 – 7/18/2007

Chrysler Hopes Old-School Transport Has Some Magic Left

Being the parent of a 7-year-old who's just starting to catch on to the Harry Potter craze, the biggest debate in my house lately has been if and when Harry will perish. Second only to that has been the question of whether or not the minivan will survive the crossover coup, as Ford and GM have turned into murderous Lord Voldemorts, morbidly placing their minivan lines on the chopping block. Yet Chrysler is pulling off its own wizardry, gambling on the renewal of the minivan and its rise as the greatest mode of transportation since the Nimbus 2001.

I recently got a brief, three-day stint in the highly anticipated 2008 Chrysler Town & Country, with my children in tow. Although I'm looking forward to our typical two-week test drive, I can let you in on a few of Chrysler's highly guarded chamber of Town & Country secrets.

The highly functional Stow 'n Go seats are still available on this '08 version, but an upgrade from that is the new Swivel 'n Go seats. These second-row captain's chairs rotate 180 degrees and lock in place facing the rear of the vehicle. This creates a living-room-like conversation zone between passengers in the second and third rows. A table can then be installed between these two rows, creating the perfect spot to share secrets of the Dark Arts while dining on Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans (watch out for the ones that taste like rotten eggs).

2008 Chrysler Town&Country

With the entertainment system in this minivan, second-row passengers can watch the latest Harry Potter DVD while third-row passengers independently play the "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" video game. Up front, parents can listen to their own music. The optional Sirius (oh, too easy) Satellite TV system streams three live television channels into the entertainment system (Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) — just when you thought you'd left the chaos behind at home.

With any luck, you might be blessed with Potter fans who'd prefer to stick their noses in hundreds of pages of the latest Rowling adventure than watch live TV on long road trips. That's just nowhere near normal. What is this world coming to, anyhow?

Oh come on!  I have been anxiously awaiting this van for a year now and you are one of the lucky ones to finally get your hands on it and all you tell us about is stuff we already know (new seating options, satellite tv, etc.)???  Aren’t you supposed to write a review of the vehicle?  How does it drive?  How is the new 5 speed transmission compared to the 4 speed on the last model? Are the buttons for the new sliding door power windows within reach of the little ones?  Do they have the safety feature of not allowing the sliding door to go all the way back when the window is down like the Hyundai Entourage?  Does the new position of the gear shift work well or does it feel awkward?  You can’t call what you wrote a car review at all.

I agree with Leslie.  This is not a review.  It’s a recap of info we already knew and has been posted already at cars.com.  Some useful info would be:  how did it drive?  easy to reconfigure seats? seating comfort?  ergonomics?  quality of materials and workmanship?  Such a wasted article.

I agree…not a review. It’s a preview! But I guess it says that in the title…

I agree with Greg and Oprah…how can Leslie and Bob be great parents if they can’t even read the title of the article and realize that it isn’t actually a review? They had no reason whatsover to attack Kristen or her article. It’s one thing to be curious and ask more questions - maybe that would prompt Kristen to check those things out if and when she writes a full review - but it’s another thing to jump headstrong into judgemental statements that fly in direct conflict with the facts. Let’s hope that aspect of their personalities isn’t benig passed on to their kids! We’re a bit more analytical in my household…but anyway.

All in all, a great PREVIEW and I am eager to hear more about the new Town and Country.

Okay, let me say that I should have rephrased my writing - I did read that it said preview so I should have said that in my post.  But what I was trying to say was that there is no point in a “preview” since the only thing she wrote were things that anyone who had been reading up on the new minivans already knew.  My gripe was that she drove the van - it is the first time I’ve seen where a reviewer/previewer actually got to have possession of the van; I feel she should have written more detailed information about the van - she would have been the first to do so.  Had she used the few paragraphs writing about the van instead of all the Harry Potter references it would have been much more useful. I know it’s just a minivan, but I really like them, and I am really excited about this particular one - I was just disappointed by her article.  I have read plenty of her other articles and been satisfied.  I was hoping by posting my comments that she would come back and write more details, and I’m still hoping that will happen soon.  grin
And as far as the name calling, on the internet it is pointless and I won’t engage in something so childish.  I don’t think the writer of this articles would be offended on a personal level by what I wrote - I’m sure as a journalist she’s had much worse from editors or her other superiors.  I think she would have gotten my point that I just wanted more detailed information.  If she was personally offended however, I will apologize because that was never my intent.

Preview Review who cares.  No new info was the problem people were pointing out.  Chrysler has already paid PR people to tell us what Kristan repeated.
Kristan’s job was to tell us a little bit about how it rides, it’s quiteness or lack thereof, etc. , not in great detail thats a review, just some quick info on the way
the car drives etc.

Not everyone remembers everything about a van that debuted at an auto show six months ago so I think this preview is useful.

There is an embargo on the driving impressions which means she couldn’t tell you about them if she wanted to. When that embargo lifts she’ll run the full review. with the word Review in the title.

And I deleted any posts with the “d” word. Keep it clean guys. Would you want your mother reading that?

I’ll write the full R-eview once I drive the car for my full two week test drive…  We make a habit of not reviewing cars that we only drive briefly (that’s what the rest of the world does).  I’ll wait until I see how well it handles carpool, grocery shopping, ya know, the real world.

WE just bought a new 08 T&C van from DARCARS in silver spring, md.  It was either the 1st or 2nd sold their.  The saleswoman told us it contained Sat TV in the third row screen.  My kids were thrilled.  after we got it home we spent weeks trying to get the SAT TV to come up.  AFter hours on the phone to Sirius and the dealer they finally told us it did not have SAT TV.  Now the saleswoman is denying she ever told us.  My young daughter remembers what she said and my husband and I both remember vividly.  She made a mistake because the vehicle was too new with too many new options.  She messed up and now just needs to fix it.  The dealer-up to the general manger level basically called us in for a meeting to tell us WE were lying.  Unvelievable orgranization-trust and integrity obviously are not important to them.  Customer satisfaction-well you can just forget that.  So watch were you shop and make them go through every single option becuase you can’t take them at their word.  Best of luck.

I bought a 2008 T&C Touring 09/30/2007 and in many ways wish I had not.  We had narrowed our minivan choice to a Honda and the Chrysler; all basic features being equal, we wanted to buy American.  Well, now we find out that the Chrysler was built in Canada and the Honda in Alabama.  Go figure.  Anyway, we are actually on the 2nd T&C because we made the dealership take the first one back.  Morning after I bought it, it made a terrible racket from the back.  Found that the muffler was barely on.  Then the radio wouldn’t come on.  The roof racks are positioned incorrectly from the factory and make it sound like you are in a wind tunnel.  Service can move the racks positions alittle and that helps, but it requires an inconvient service visit.  Same noise in the 2nd van and a rental—-so it wasn’t just a fluke with the 1st one.  We got the swivel and go.  Don’t plan on having adults use this feature with the table—-there is just no room.  current problems with the sliding doors popping back open with they get about 2” away from closing.  Dealer service says they have a couple of vans reporting the same thing and a flash of the computer memory is supposed to fix it—-well, I made yet another service visit to have this done.  I went to pick it up and had the service manager test it—-it failed immediately.  So I was back to square one.  They said there were no other tricks up their sleeve to fix it, so I will be taking it in two more times so I can involk my rights under the Florida Lemon law.

I have to say buying the 2008 Town & Country was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.  After purchasing this van when it first came out in 10/07 we had it back in the shop because the slider doors kept opening on their own after we got them part way closed.  Took more than 1 visit to fix this issue.  Then our SAT radio started acting up so they replaced it only to have the new radio do the same thing.  Finally the 3rd radio works.  The swivel n go with the table is useless as there is no leg room when you try to use it.  Lastly at 7500 miles I took the van in because the brakes were going bad only to be told that the shop would be putting on new front brakes and rotors as the rotors were shot.  Thought all the problems were taken care of but now at 11,800 miles I am having the same brake problems.  Took it to the shop yesterday and they called me this morning to say they were replacing the brakes all around and putting on new rotors again since the new brake pads were also “defective”  How can I feel safe driving my kids around in a van that needs brakes every 4,000-7,000 miles for a defect.  Do yourself a favor and don’t buy a T&C.
