Momosphere: 6.12.09, The Summer Reading Edition
Jun 12 2009 by Jennifer Newman
Summer is a time to slow down and enjoy life. One of the best ways to do that is with a good book, but it’s not always easy to find a good summer read. Here are some recommendations for both kids and grownups.
The List: Children’s Literature We Love; SimpleKids.net
I love reading to my two boys. It’s an important part of their bedtime routine and something I look forward to every night. However, there are a few books — “Goodnight Moon,” “Kiss Good Night,” “How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight” — that I’d be happy to never read again. Don’t get me wrong; they’re wonderful books. It’s just that I’ve read them so many times I can now recite them from memory. I was thrilled to stumble across this list of parent-approved children’s books. We’ll be heading to the library this weekend to hunt some of them down.
You’ve Got Questions, I’ve Got Beach Reads; Jennsylvania
It’s summer, which means it’s OK to be seen reading light-hearted novels (I refuse to use the term “chick-lit”) in public — preferably poolside or on a beach. Blogger/author Jen Lancaster, who mines her own life for her frank and hilarious memoirs — including “Bitter is the New Black” and “Pretty in Plaid” (next on my to-read list) — is sharing her recommendations for summer reads. I’ll be diving into several of these books very soon.

I’ve found I can only read so many frothy novels before my brain starts to crave something of substance. NPR’s critics have named their top picks for summer, and they’re not just talking fiction here. From mysteries to cookbooks to nonfiction, there’s bound to be a book that’ll appeal to everyone. What’s even better is the critics will continue to update their lists throughout the summer.
