Lincoln Puts Style, Class Into its 2010 MKT
Oct 28 2009 by Sherrice Gilsbach
Lincoln has designed a car specifically for us and they’ve done a bang-up job. The 2010 Lincoln MKT was designed with “Susan,” an accomplished, professional female Gen Xer in mind, according to Carl Widmann, Ford’s vehicle dynamics manager. Just like today’s modern moms, the MKT is no wall flower.
With its flowing design and toothy chrome grille, the MKT certainly makes a statement. It looks like a speedy, aggressive wagon.
The interior has all of the elements I demand and then some. The MKT can seat up to seven. In the second row, you can choose between a three-person bench seat or bucket seats, which drop the seating capacity to six. If you get bucket seats, you can opt for a refrigerated second-row console that’s large enough to hold seven cans.
The MKT has three Latch connectors with two sets in the second row and a third set in the third row on the passenger side. They were all easy to get to. Heated and cooled second-row seats are available.
The MKT offers plenty of deep cargo storage. If you get the available PowerFold third row, you can tailgate in style. This feature quickly flips the third-row bench backward to create a seat for tailgating. I really was impressed with this crossover’s utilitarian potential. It’s stylish and classy enough to carry clients during the workday but convenient and fun enough to excite your family, too.
The MKT boasted several fun optional features like the refrigerated console and an entertainment system with monitors in the back of the front seats’ headrests. There are no screens hanging from the ceiling and obscuring your view, and it comes with wireless headphones so Mom isn’t forced to listen to cartoons filled with whiny high-pitched characters. Ahhh!
During a tour of the MKT’s interior I broke down and had a girly moment. With the touch of a button atop the center stack, I could change the color of the car’s ambient lighting, and I don’t mean just primary colors either. There was a light teal, grass green and even lavender.
This stylish crossover comes with a choice of two V-6 engines. The base engine makes 268 horsepower. The optional EcoBoost engine, which has V-8 power with V-6 fuel economy, gets 355 hp.
The only thing Lincoln could improve upon is the MKT’s gas mileage. The base model with front-wheel drive gets 16/23 mpg city/highway, while the all-wheel-drive model with the EcoBoost engine gets 16/22 mpg. I know this is a big car — it has three rows after all — but this mom wants it all, including great fuel economy.
If you want to take the MKT for a spin, it’s in dealer showrooms and has a starting price of $44,200, without a $795 destination charge.
