L.A. Auto Show: Mazda Zooms Into Show With Mazda2

Dec 04 2009 by Lori Hindman

Mazda’s “zoom, zoom” is coming in a smaller package. At the L.A. Auto Show, Mazda introduced their smallest car, the Mazda2. It looks a lot like a shrunken Mazda3, with four doors, a hatchback and sporty styling. Mazda tells us that the Mazda2 will be chock-full of technology and fun.

The Mazda2 will have a 1.5-liter four-cylinder paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. While the automaker hasn’t revealed any mileage figures, it says the Mazda2 will be its most fuel-efficient car in the U.S.

Mazda says their cars aren’t geared for any particular demographic, but the Mazda2 looks to be a cool car for the younger set. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the Mazda2 is expected to be the least expensive Mazda on the road.

There appears to be ample cargo space, but the backseat looks tight. We weren’t allowed to climb around and really explore the Mazda2 at the auto show. However, what I saw was cute-looking, sporty, little car. I’ll bet it’s fun to drive but less fun to load kids into. However, it might be a good fit for a teen driver. I look forward to putting it through its paces in a MotherProof.com test drive with my family.
