Fun, Functional Eco-Camper Channels Spirit of Microbus
Nov 06 2008 by Sara Lacey
For many years, Volkswagen Microbus fans have been waiting for their beloved Microbus or something like it to make a comeback. We’ve been teased mercilessly by concept vans that don’t go into production — until now. Verdier Van and Camper has made a Microbus-like camper, and they’ll even sell us one, people.
When I first saw the camper in a magazine, I assumed it was just another concept car that wouldn’t see the light of day. But then I read that this is actually a vehicle I can buy. The Solar Power Eco-Camper is a hybrid that’s powered by solar panels that recharge its batteries and a bio-diesel/diesel engine, making it clean and efficient; I love a guilt-free purchase. The Sun Tracker, which uses the camper’s GPS, rotates the solar panels to find the best sun exposure.
It’s all fascinating and brilliant, but what I really love about these campers is their functional, fun design and color choices. You can choose from Woody, Geeky, Ebony, Blueberry and Purity color schemes. The Verdier camper’s functionality is stunning: The pop-up top can be accessed simply by folding down the front passenger seat, which has stairs built into the back, or by a ladder that’s integrated into an exterior sliding door. There’s a stove, refrigerator, freezer and vestibules (gazebos) that come out of the pop-up top to cover the outdoor cooking area. There’s also a folding table and chairs with a modern design focus. Seriously, this thing is awesome.
The only hitch is that it costs $129,000; I guess I’ll have to dream about it until I win that darn lottery.

I am so with you, Mamabear. Shoot, I’m hoping to maybe even test one someday. Right, Verdier?

So. Freakin’. Cool.
The ultimate in Geek Chic. A 21st century eco-answer to the Winnebagos and Airstreams of our ancestors. Even has an onboard computer. No, I can’t afford one yet either, but I’d sure get one if I could.
