Few Chrysler Vehicles to Survive Fiat Merger

Oct 27 2009 by Jennifer Newman

The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that nearly the entire Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep lineups will be replaced in five years by Fiat vehicles, including Alfa Romeos. Fiat’s plans for Chrysler were revealed a week before the Italian automaker planned to meet with analysts and the media to unveil its plan.

The return of Alfa to the U.S. market could be a tough sell for those Americans who remember the brand; Fiat pulled out of the U.S. market in 1981. However, many buyers won’t know the automaker’s history and could welcome the Italian luxury product with its Ferrari ties. At MotherProof.com, we’ve been looking forward to the return of the Alfa lineup and its sporty elegance. Here’s what could be coming to the U.S.

• Fiat 500: Hits U.S. in 2011
• Alfa Romeo MiTo
• Alfa Romeo Milano
• Alfa Romeo unnamed midsize sedan

The Fiat 500 will be made in Mexico, and the Alfa cars will be built somewhere in North America. Chrysler has plants in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

Chrysler has had a difficult year. After surviving bankruptcy, the automaker’s market share has continued to slip. This might be the perfect time for Fiat’s plan, which is a bold move. It’s too bad they can’t get the Fiats here sooner to help boost Chrysler’s sagging sales numbers.

Fiat will formally announce its plans for Chrysler next week. In the meantime, here are the future plans for the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep lineups as reported by the Journal.
