Dreaming of a Saab, Volvo Merger
Feb 26 2009 by Emily Hansen
Saab’s recent bankruptcy filing coupled with Ford’s intentions to sell Volvo has me dreaming in Swedish. I’ve been a longtime fan of both brands, and I’m dreaming of a merger between the two Swedish automakers.
Both automakers have impeccable safety records; Saab cars have been Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick since 2006, and Volvo’s earned the honors since 2007. The Swedish automakers also have an unwavering commitment to wagons, and we love wagons at MotherProof.com. That’s not all we love about these two automakers:
Saab
• The turbo engines make driving a lot of fun.
• The ignition is in the console, and we like its quirky placement.
• Its offbeat looks and personality make them appealing to moms who want to stand out.
Volvo
• Its cars are luxurious without being pretentious.
• The automaker is on the leading edge of safety technology with its new City Safety System, watch a video of this system here.
• It offers kid friendly features like integrated booster seats.
My fantasy starts with these two safety powerhouses coming into a large pot of money. Then over some shots of aquavit, a Scandinavian liquor, the automakers decide to keep the best-selling cars in each line and work on a combined project to bring the coolest family ride to the masses. I’d like to see something that combines the fun of the Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid concept car’s glass roof with the functionality and gadgetry of the Volvo XC60.
It’s just a dream, and in reality these two contenders for my quintessential mom-mobile are in transition. I, for one, have my pompoms at the ready. I look forward to seeing what innovations come from these tough times for the auto industry and for these two Swedish gems in particular. Maybe, just maybe, some fairy dust will be sprinkled and a Volvaab will be my car for life.

If Saab and Volvo merge, would it be called SAALVO?
Big Jim, I was thinking the same thing!
I went for Volvaab… although SAALVO works for me too ![]()
Your article was excellent. I’ve owned Volvos and Saabs, and I think they are worth saving. If they could merge together - they could potentially manufacture some finely engineered cars. As for the new name, well…motherproof could come up with an exicting one.
The Volvo Group is a Swedish supplier of commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. Saab Automobile AB, better known as Saab, is a Swedish car manufacturer and currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors. If it merges, a renovation of revolution definitely took place. http://www.localcarsnow.com
