Designers Make Fashion Out of Saturn Hybrid

Project Runway

‘Project Runway’ Spoiler Alert!

If you Tivo’d “Project Runway” last week and haven’t watched it yet, do not read on.

If you did watch it, you were surely as impressed as I was with the week’s challenge: Take some car parts and make an outfit out of them. At first I thought the designers were going to have to smash up, rip up and tear apart the Saturn Vue hybrids that were the source of their materials, but that part of the challenge wasn’t very exciting, as most of the materials were just stashed in the vehicles.

It was a load of fun, though, seeing the designers take these crazy car bits and turn them into something exciting and wearable. I loved Jerell’s ensemble; it was kind of out there design-wise, but fun to see on the runway with the model’s crazy hair and makeup. It was a seat belt coat designed by Korto, though, that stole my heart. It was simply beautiful.

Leanne won with an innovative outfit that used seat leather and frayed seat belts in a cocktail mini-dress with majorly embellished hips. It was totally out there and fun, which I’d expect to see in that kind of challenge. I wonder if this outfit will be seen on the models at Saturn’s display at the Detroit auto show this year (hint, hint Saturn!).

Seat belt coat!!???  Where can I get one?  It sounds awesome (and I’m so tired of the seat belt purse that every woman in the industry carries - yawn).  Maybe we can have MotherProof.com seat belt coats made and wear them for our ‘from Detroit Auto Show’ videos…

The coats sound like a fabulous idea, but I really want the cocktail dress and a super fancy reason to wear it!

hello from Saturn!  I really enjoyed your blog and really wish we could have the garments to show at the Detroit Auto Show.  Unfortunately - they are auctioned off for charity (as all of the “Project Runway” outfits are!) and while we have the outfits now on loan, only get to borrow them for a few months. We’re working on a plan to share them with fans, and I’ll keep you posted!
