Chrysler Details Plans for the Future
Nov 04 2009 by Jennifer Newman
Today, Chrysler executives revealed their plans for the automaker’s brands of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. The troubled automaker emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year with a new partner, Fiat.
Some of the Italian automaker’s lineup will appear on U.S. shores for the 2012 model year, according to today’s presentation.
Here are some of the family-car highlights from the daylong meeting.
Chrysler
• By the end of 2010, the Town & Country minivan will get a new look inside and out as well as a new engine, better suspension and improved fuel economy. The minivan will be completely redesigned for the 2014 model year.
• The Sebring will also get a redesign. It will go on sale by the end of next year.
• The PT Cruiser will be phased out by the end of 2010.
• For 2012-13, Chrysler will offer a new Fiat-based subcompact, compact, midsize sedan and midsize crossover.
Dodge
• The Dodge Caliber, a five-person hatchback, will get a new interior and more by the end of this year.
• For 2010, Dodge will offer a full-size three-row crossover that seats seven and competes with the Chevy Traverse and Ford Flex.
• Also for 2010, the Grand Caravan will get redesigned on the inside and out with a new engine and better fuel economy. That’s got to make some minivan-loving moms happy!
• The Dodge Journey crossover will get a new interior and a refreshed exterior by the end of 2010.
• For 2013, Fiat’s influence will be noticed in the Dodge lineup with a midsize sedan that’s based on a Fiat platform. It will replace the Dodge Avenger.
Jeep
• The Grand Cherokee gets an all-new design that we love.
• The Wrangler will get an all-new look for 2011.
• For 2013, Jeep plans to come out with a small SUV – think Mini-Cooper small – on a Fiat platform as well as Fiat-based replacements for the Liberty and Patriot.
• Say bye-bye to the three-row Commander.
