AutoWeek Magazine Showcases Family’s Car Connections

Oct 03 2008 by Sara Lacey

A couple of recent issues of AutoWeek magazine reinforced to me the notion that it really is a small world.

My dad is an auto enthusiast, which is one of many things that he passed along to me. We regularly have conversations about the latest issue of AutoWeek, and we had lots to talk about in regard to one recent issue. The magazine’s 50th anniversary edition looked at landmark cars, and we owned one of the cars featured in it: a 1984 Audi Quattro coupe. (My dad would have me remind you that it was a limited-import U.S. version with a five-cylinder turbocharged engine and a long wheelbase, not a Sport Quattro, which it was frequently confused with.)

I loved that car, and I rode in it to my senior prom. Of course I had permission! What kind of girl do you think I am? I’m even sharing a scary ’80s prom picture with you to prove it (I’m the one in royal blue with the gigantic shoulder pads). I know you’re reading this blog only to see the blackmail-worthy image.

But the family connection to AutoWeek doesn’t stop there. The Sept. 22 issue featured a story about the 1913 Coey Flyer. It’s a really neat article for me, because this car was built by my husband’s great-great uncle, C. A. Coey or “Crazy” Uncle Charlie. Coey had quite the entrepreneurial spirit; he built a car dealership and created a driving school. As an avid hot-air ballooner, he’d likely be considered an extreme-sport enthusiast these days. My mother-in-law would probably say that he had a severe case of ADD, because he was always moving from one project to the next. Anyway, we always knew there were cars of his out there, but I was truly tickled to see the 1913 Coey Flyer in the pages of AutoWeek.

Do you have any interesting automotive ties? Let us know in the comments section.

Who is the person in the white dress?  Sure looks like someone I knew if this is in the Rockford, IL area.
