L.A. Auto Show: The Lexus RX Update … Updated

Nov 24 2008 by Sara Lacey

I was excited when I discovered that Lexus would unveil its redesigned 2010 RX 350 and RX 450h at the L.A. auto show. But when I saw the redesigned cars, I realized it might take a lot to impress me, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Am I expecting fireworks to shoot out of the tailpipe or what?

I initially thought the redesign of the two cars was a little underwhelming as far as the exterior goes. But you know what? I needed to readjust my expectations, and upon some reflection, the redesign is entirely appropriate. The old RX design was pretty timeless, and this new one will most likely last a long time, too. The RX looks like it sits a bit lower than its predecessor (this could be something that won’t appeal to the crossover lovers who like higher sightlines). The grille’s a little more aggressive-looking. No, it’s not pimped out with crazy, boxy styling or trendy colors, and that’s OK. If I want that stuff I can buy a Scion, right?

Where the redesign really shines is in the interior. There’s a new center stack that’s so easy on the eyes, and the dashboard is swoopy. The leather seats are soft (but perforated, so don’t bring those sippy cups onboard), and the seating is spacious and comfortable. The Latch connectors are still easy to access, and there’s great legroom in the backseat. The rear seats fold in a 40/20/40 configuration and allows for a bevy of cargo-carrying options.

The only thing that bothers me is the joystick-oriented infotainment system. These things always scare me, but I’ll wait for a test drive before I make an official statement about it. All in all, while I was originally underwhelmed and slightly let down by the redesign, I think Lexus made a nice update to a classic original.
