L.A. Auto Show: Keeping Your Furry Family Members Safe

Nov 21 2008 by Lori Hindman

My first babies were dogs, and in our house, our pets are part of the family. The Bark Buckle Up pet safety program was at the L.A. auto show to teach us how to keep our furry family members safe in the car.

Safe pet travel is all about properly restraining your pets. The good folks at Bark Buckle Up have joined with police and animal control officers and medical first-responders to find the safest ways for your pets to travel. Bark Buckle Up recommends using the PetBuckle Seatbelt Harness to keep pets safe and secure in the car. It’s easy to use and available in four sizes to fit your furry ones just right. And just like with kids, pets are safest in the backseat; an airbag is just as dangerous for your pet as for your children. In an accident, there’s more than just your pet’s well-being at stake, an unrestrained animal can become a projectile and injure anyone in the car.

In an emergency situation, an unrestrained pet makes things much more difficult for police and paramedics. Imagine a paramedic opening a car door to rescue you or your child, and your dog leaps out onto a busy highway. Or maybe that pet is acting protective and won’t let the first-responders near you. Organizations like the International Association of the Chiefs of Police love Bark Buckle Up because it teaches people to secure their pets in their cars and avoid just these types of situations.

This year, Bark Buckle Up awarded its Pet Safe Vehicle of Choice title to the Volvo XC90. The XC90 won because it has lots of safety features and an optional pet gate designed specifically for it. Unlike other pet gates that use suction cups and springs to hold them in place, Volvo’s gate bolts directly into the car so that even the biggest and strongest dogs are contained. The Volvo pet gate also has a divider that can separate two pets or luggage. Bark Buckle Up tested 15 cars in order to designate one its vehicle of choice, and local first-responders helped make the decision.

So, keep those furry babies safe and buckle them up. For more information, check out the Bark Buckle Up website.
