L.A. Auto Show: GM’s, Chrysler’s Silence is Deafening

Nov 20 2008 by Sara Lacey

When we arrived at the L.A. auto show yesterday, Kristin Varela and I sat down with the conference schedule. We plotted and schemed; we made plans about what cars we wanted to see and what we thought you’d want to know about.

We knew that Chrysler and GM were scaling back their auto show plans, including canceling press conferences and new-car debuts. But it wasn’t until we got to the auto show that we really felt the impact of that move. When I went over to Chrysler’s booth yesterday, it was like a ghost town, especially since the auto show is only open to the media right now. Chrysler had tons of cars on display, but no one was around to talk about them.

While this was going on, news came in that the Big Three auto executives had flown separately on their private jets to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress for a $25 billion loan. CNN reported this morning that the Big Three automakers have insurance policies that require the CEOs to fly privately for security purposes. In any case, the buzz from the D.C. trip wasn’t the kind of buzz the automakers wanted.

Before I even left my house for L.A., I thought it’d be interesting to hear what GM and Chrysler were going to say. As it turns out, they might have been following the rule, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

we just know that both of them were scaling back their LA auto show plans and we’d expect something much bigger to take..just imagine their plans of having modified cars such as the front wheel bearings part and more.
