Detroit Auto Show: GM Committed to Hybrids, Electric Vehicles and Local Business
Jan 12 2009 by Sherrice Gilsbach
GM is working to keep people and jobs in Michigan. The automaker announced today that Compact Power, based in Troy, Mich., will supply lithium-ion battery cells for the 2010 Chevrolet Volt.
This is exciting news on many levels. The partnership with Compact Power, a U.S. subsidiary of South Korea-based LG Chem, will create the first lithium-ion-battery-pack-manufacturing facility in the U.S. to be operated by a major automaker. The jobs created by this move will bring economic relief to many Detroit-area families who have been hurt by the downturn in the automotive industry.
To round out the announcement-packed conference, GM also unveiled a plan to collaborate with the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering to develop a specialized automotive battery engineering curriculum. Finally, there’s a plan that’ll help keep Michigan kids local after they graduate from college!
In our topsy-turvy world where many U.S. companies are investing in overseas facilities, it’s nice to see GM keeping things in the family!

“topsy-turvy” who are your readers ??????? yikes !!!!
