Detroit Auto Show: Accessories Make the Car
Jan 13 2009 by Sherrice Gilsbach
Do you get excited about a new purse, a pair of earrings or shoes? Of course you do! Well, there’s plenty of cool car accessories to get excited about at the Detroit auto show. I don’t mean fuzzy dice and bumper stickers; I’m talking about the details automakers use to make their cars just a pinch more unique and memorable than the rest.
My accessory quest started with the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 — not a bad place to begin. The Shelby GT500’s cobra emblem was the first thing that caught my eye. According to a Ford exec, the signature cobra had to be moved from the traditional right side of the grille to the left because of design issues. The car’s designers were so concerned about the move that they contacted automotive legend Carroll Shelby himself to get permission to move the cobra. The GT500 also sported a really fun-looking billiard-ball-like shift knob and a racy red leather interior. Hubba hubba!
From there I moved on to a 2009 Kia Soul and its ultra stylish houndstooth paint job. The Kia Soul’ster Concept, a sporty-looking truck, had some charming light-blue covers cloaking its fog lights. It looked like the Soul’ster was wearing blue eye shadow.
There were a lot of practical-looking interiors over at the Volkswagen exhibit. I had to look really hard to find that special detail, but deep inside one of the headlights I found a bulb with the VW emblem adhered to it. I wonder if a “VW” appears on the road when the lights are on. Cool!
I was cautious as I approached the Bentley exhibit because I was kind of expecting someone to kick me out of there. After all, there was a sign that read “By Invitation Only.” I walked inside … and then I drooled. There’s no way to pick out just one detail from these cars; it’s an amalgam of exquisite details. Shiny, glimmering, angelic details. ‘Nuf said.
