Detroit Auto Show: 2010 Prius Ups its MPGs
Jan 12 2009 by Sherrice Gilsbach
The North American International Auto Show has featured a lot of hybrid concept cars and other green plans for the future. Today, Toyota unveiled its new third-generation Prius, which achieves a combined 50 mpg!
The 2010 Prius will reach dealerships this spring. It’ll offer not only outstanding fuel economy, but also an additional 5 cubic feet of interior space and four driving modes to improve fuel usage. It also has an available moonroof with solar cells that power a ventilation system that keeps the car’s interior cool once it’s been parked on hot days.
The new Prius doesn’t look that different from the outside, despite several improvements made to increase the hybrid’s aerodynamics. Under the hood, you’ll find the workings of more than 1,000 newly patented technologies. By comparison, the first Prius gave birth to more than 300 patent applications.
Toyota is projecting sales of the new Prius to reach 180,000 cars this year. It predicts sales will continue to grow until hybrid technology is available in all Toyota platforms in the 2020s.
