L.A. Auto Show: Bikinis Are Out, But Beautiful Models Are Still In

When I told people I’d be working at the L.A. auto show, there were a few jokes about me busting out my bikini and draping myself across the cars. Of course I’m not doing that kind of work; I’m a serious journalist, thankyouverymuch! But the jokes got me wondering: Are there still bikini-clad models at the auto show?
Well, as far as I can tell, the answer is no. But before all the feminists out there get too excited, let me say that while the bikinis are absent, the ladies aren’t. These days they let the models wear evening dresses, which I find very forward-thinking and enlightened. I mean, it can get cold on the auto show floor, what with the air conditioning!
I find it amazing that today’s car manufacturers still think it’s necessary to hire pretty young women to stand around their cars as an added lure to car enthusiasts. Maybe it’s just because as a woman I don’t feel the draw, but I can’t understand why anyone would want to draw attention from the cars at hand. And for some reason, it’s the exotic cars that have the most models floating around them. I mean, do auto manufacturers want show attendees to look at the car or the women? I guess now we know why they don’t wear bikinis anymore: It’s too much competition for anyone.
I personally think the ladies should be wearing blue jeans and a shirt or wearing a business suit. You shouldn’t try to sell cars with sex, because that all the eveing dresses are doing as well as the bikini’s. Think about it, whoever has the hottest looking girls get the most sells right? Everyone knows I am right. Okay think about this what about putting guys in swim trunks up there. Do any of you think that that would sell more to these guys or the girls in the evening dresses. I guess it depends on your sex.
