Mother’s Day on the Cheap and in the Car

May 07 2009 by Jennifer Newman

It’s nearly Mother’s Day, and instead of getting her a bouquet of flowers (played out) or breakfast in bed (too messy!), why not get her something to make her time in the car easier?

Between carpooling, the kids’ soccer practice and trips to Costco, moms log a lot of time behind the wheel. A MotherProof.com survey found that moms spent an average of 405 hours — or nearly 17 days —  in their cars in 2008.

We’ve compiled a list of inexpensive or — even better — free Mother’s Day gift ideas. Be warned: The gifts that don’t cost any money will require some elbow grease, but dads can enlist the kids to help.

Free
• Take over Mom’s carpool shift for a week (no complaining about it afterward).
• Check and fill her car’s tires.
• Clear the clutter out of the car (make sure to put the items away once you get them in the house). Chief Mama Kristin Varela has some great tips on keeping clutter from taking over your car in this video.
• Hand-wash and vacuum her car.

Inexpensive
• Get her a new travel mug; we love I Am Not a Paper Cup.
• Add some new tunes to her iPod or get her a gift certificate so she can do it herself.
• Help her relax with a “Yoga in the Car” CD.
• Pick up a Starbucks gift card for her afternoon pick-me-up.
• Buy a storage container or “go box” to help contain her car’s clutter and fill it with helpful car accessories, including the SmartPad, Scotch Lint Sheets and OdorZout.
