More Moms are Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
Aug 20 2009 by Kristin Varela
I’ve been shocked and surprised by the recent influx of news about moms driving while under the influence of various substances, including marijuana, and getting into deadly accidents.
Arrests of women driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol increased 28.8 percent between 1998 and 2007, according to the Department of Transportation. During the same time period, DUI arrests for men decreased 7.5 percent.
Marijuana was just one contributing factor in a horrific accident on the Taconic State Parkway in New York. Driver Diane Schuler drove the wrong way down the parkway and crashed into an oncoming SUV, killing the three adults inside. Toxicology tests found that Schuler had both alcohol and marijuana in her system. The crash also killed Schuler’s 3-year-old daughter and three nieces who were in her car. A mom of three in Arkansas reportedly tested positive for marijuana (as well as benzodiazepines and traces of alcohol) after recently crashing her car into a lake, killing her three young sons.
I’ve found several articles recently on MomLogic.com about Marijuana Mamas, the growing culture of moms who use marijuana on a regular basis to help them “unwind, stay sane and have more energy.”
We’re all aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, but there’s not a lot of talk about driving while stoned. As a straight arrow by choice (I don’t drink alcohol or use drugs and never have), this topic is so foreign to me that I’m not sure how to approach it. I’m trying to understand the mindset of a mom who would choose to get behind the wheel, especially with her kids in the car, while under the influence of anything.
Do you know anybody who has driven while stoned, either alone or with kids in the car? While some people say marijuana is benign and doesn’t affect their reasoning or driving reflexes, would you risk your children’s lives on it by allowing them in the car with a spouse who’s high? Tell us in the comment section below.

Sometimes after our kids are asleep my husband and like to a have a few drinks and we’ll sneak into the garage and smoke pot. Its helps us relax epecially after a stressful day. But we do not drink and get high and drive. We keep it discreetly in the privacy of our home. When the kid are away for the weekend, hubby and I will party at the house and have a blast. We aren’t trailer park either,we are upper middle class folks who live on Long Island and hubby owns his own business. There’s nothing wrong with a little pot sometimes. Its better than all those prescription drugs with side effects and yes ,pot should be legal.
