Guest Drive: Shauna Glenn of Is It 5 O’Clock Yet?

Sep 03 2009 by Lori Hindman

I tend to be an outrageously snarky mama, and I always enjoy finding someone even more outrageous than myself. Enter Shauna Glenn of the blog Is It 5 O’clock Yet?, and author of “Heaping Spoonful.” Shauna’s a mother of four — ages 15, 14, 7 and 4 — as well as a lover of Pinot Grigio and words that make people cringe.

Her blog is a slightly exaggerated yet completely relatable version of her life as a WAHM in Texas. She’s funny, honest and cute, and she’ll tell you so herself. I have a feeling that she would fit in at MotherProof.com’s Global Headquarters.

Shauna took our Guest Drive out for a spin. Here’s what she had to say about her life in her Toyota Sequoia.

1) What characteristics of your car embarrass you or your kids:
They’re not embarrassed by this car. They said they would only be embarrassed if I drove a minivan. I’m thinking of getting a minivan.

2) If you could design your own car, what would it look like and what types of features would you add?
Restraints for hands and feet, duct tape for mouths, built-in cooler with a never-ending supply of wine (not while driving, of course — a driver comes with the car).

3) What is more important to you in a car; comfort, performance, safety or style?
Well, if I had my way, I’d be driving a Maserati. But since I have all these kids (and their friends) I say, “Bigger is better.”

4) What kind of terrible mess has occurred in your car? What fixed it (or what didn’t), and do you have any suggestions for our readers?
Chocolate milk left overnight in a 100-degree heat is a complete failure. Torch the car and start from scratch. You can’t recover from sour milk.

5) Does your family have a favorite pastime to endure long road trips? What sure-fire road trip tricks can you share with us?
Movies, movies, movies. Sometimes they’re so quietly engaged in whatever DVD is playing that I get bored!

6) Do you consider yourself a multitasker while driving?
Definitely. I can follow directions, dole out snacks, change the DVD and learn Spanish all at the same time.

7) What is your favorite thing to listen to in the car?  Do you rock out or do you enjoy the quiet serenity after drop-off?
I love to listen to ’80s music and CNN (so I can offer more to conversations than which episode of “Dora the Explorer” aired that day).

8) Describe the view and the passengers in your ultimate joy-ride:
Rolling hills, fields of flowers, the ocean off in the distance, all while riding with the top down in a hot little Italian sports car — with a hot little Italian. (Honey, I’m totally kidding.)
