Guest Drive: Lucrecer Braxton of Art-Slam.com

Aug 18 2009 by Kristin Varela

At BlogHer ’09, I was thrilled to connect with so many female bloggers, but I was overwhelmed by how many similar online life journals are out there. That’s why it was so refreshing to meet Lucrecer Braxton of Art-Slam.com.

Lucrecer’s blog is centered around her amazing, award-winning photography, and she draws inspiration from “everyday life and the interesting things her little people say.” It’s a creative, sophisticated escape, especially for those of us wrapped up in the chaos of motherhood. It reminds me to slow down and see the beauty in my day.

A mom of three kids (two girls, ages 16 and 8, and a 6-year-old boy), Lucrecer slows down to talk to us about her “party bus” (apparently the hipper term for mom-mobile), a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country.

1) Which characteristics of your car embarrass you or your kids?
My kids love it because they can choose a different place to sit in the van each time we ride in it. For me, it has completely destroyed my coolness factor. All of my cool points are gone when I am rolling in the party bus/mom-mobile.

2) If you could design your own car, what would it look like and what types of features would you add?
It would have a dirt-resistant exterior and interior. I do not always have time to clean my car, and if it could do it by itself I would love the car forever. Another great feature would be a car that only needed to be filled up once a year. Seriously, gas prices are insane, and I would like to not have to choose between filling up and eating. I would like for it to comfortably seat seven; granted, I would not drive around that many people, but I can dream. And it would be very sleek and modern-looking. A car that would elevate my cool points.

3) What kind of terrible mess has occurred in your car? What fixed it (or what didn’t), and do you have any suggestions for our readers?
I spilled red fruit punch in my car once (OK, three times), and it was everywhere. To avoid this in the future:
1) Don’t ever drink or allow anyone else to drink red anything in your car.
2) Always keep baby wipes on hand to clean up the spills quickly. Baby wipes clean up everything.
3) Find a car manufacturer who has developed the car that has a self-cleaning interior, and when you find them, let me know who they are.

4) Are there certain gizmos/gadgets/products that are must-haves in your car?
The baby wipes are a must-have. I also have to have my GPS unit. I tend to get turned around when I am looking for a new place. I also have to have my iPod Touch and the connector for it, so I can listen to my music in the car. Plus, the iPod Touch works really well to distract an irritated kid in traffic if you have it loaded with all kinds of game applications.

5) Does your family have a favorite pastime to endure long road trips? What sure-fire road-trip tricks can you share with us?
We don’t do long road trips. My son constantly asks if we are there yet, and the middle child keeps telling me (like I don’t know) that this is the longest trip she has ever been on. When we do have a long road trip, we leave around naptime. I am guaranteed at least two hours of quiet drive time.

6) Do you consider yourself a multitasker while driving?
I admit that I am a multitasker, but I keep it to a minimum. I don’t text, put on makeup or answer emails while I am driving. I do sing loudly, wave to other drivers and fuss at the kids when they are acting up in the backseat.
