Guest Drive: Joanne Bamberger of PunditMom
May 26 2009 by Courtney Messenbaugh
I lead a double life as both a MotherProofer and a political consultant, and one woman whose work I follow is celebrated political and media analyst Joanne Bamberger. She’s a free-lance writer whose work regularly appears on The Huffington Post, MOMocrats, and BlogHer.com, and she also has her own blog, PunditMom. She’s appeared on CNN and Fox News, too. Joanne is a recovering attorney (her words) and, of course, a mom of a 9-year-old girl.
When I chatted with Joanne, who drives a 2008 Honda CR-V, I also discovered that she has a great sense of what work-life balance works for her. She’s also stylish and seems like a lot of fun (quoting “Seinfeld,” dreaming about cruising along Pacific Coast Highway…how can you not adore her?).
Do yourself a favor and check out her work next time you’re browsing online for some mind candy. By the way, Joanne, you don’t need a moonroof to make you cool — you’ve already got that going on.
1. What features, if taken away, would make your life in the car less happy/peaceful?
I must have my moonroof. It still makes me feel like I still have a little “cool!”
2. If you could design your own car, what would it look like and what types of features would you add?
I want a car that looks like a sports car on the outside but has the room of an SUV on the inside. And it has to be red!!
3. What kind of terrible mess has occurred in your car? What fixed it (or what didn’t), and do you have any suggestions for our readers?
Since I have just one child, I’ve been pretty lucky — very few messes. I’ve only had to deal with the usual snack/juice messes, though some orange crayon did end upon the ceiling of my then-BMW!
4. Does your child have a favorite car?
No, but my daughter and I plan to ditch the CR-V when she turns 16 to get a little convertible!
5. What is your favorite thing to listen to in the car? Do you rock out or do you enjoy the quiet serenity after drop-off?
To quote the “Seinfeld” episode about Festivus, “Serenity now!”
6. Describe the view and the passengers in your ultimate joy-ride:
I’d be cruising down the full length of [Calif.] Highway 1 on the West Coast in a red convertible with my husband and daughter, stopping to drink in the gorgeous Pacific sunset!

Thanks so much for inviting me to think about some fun, non-political, questions!
