Ford Promotes Fusion Hybrid at ‘American Idol’ Finale

May 20 2009 by Lori Hindman

I’ve got the golden ticket — yes, I’m going to “American Idol” tonight (insert squealing here), courtesy of Ford, for the big finale. Judges Simon, Paula, Randy and Kara will be there, as will finalists Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Don’t even get me started on all of the celebrities that’ll be in the audience: Katie Holmes brought her daughter, Suri Cruise, to Tuesday night’s show and Sir Anthony Hopkins was there, as well.

Before I can see the crowning of the new “Idol” champion tonight, I’m spending the day driving Ford’s newest hybrid, the 2010 Fusion Hybrid. Ford, a longtime “Idol” sponsor, is heavily promoting the Fusion Hybrid, its first hybrid sedan, and bringing automotive journalists along to the “Idol” finale is just one part of the plan.

Over its years of sponsorship, Ford and “American Idol” have teamed to make music videos/ads starring “Idol” contestants and Ford cars. This year, the “Idol” hopefuls have been seen singing “Break My Stride” while driving a Mustang convertible, “Move Along” while chasing a Fusion and “Energy” with the Fusion Hybrid, which went from black-and-white into full color, a la “The Wizard of Oz.” In each of these videos, the cars receive as much screen time as the “Idol” hopefuls. You can view these videos at “American Idol’s” website. Each video begins with a brief clip of a woman in a Fusion; she presses the Sync system’s Media button and says, “Play artist, ‘American Idols.’” It’s product placement gone radioactive.

Do these videos make Ford seem cooler, younger or more fun? Would you be more interested in a car that your favorite “Idol” contestant drove? Or is Ford’s “Idol” sponsorship just marketing overload?

Check back tomorrow for an inside look at the “Idol” finale. I’ll have a mom’s-eye view on the performances, special guests and that anticipated confetti shower. I can’t wait.

Well, that’s a wise sponsorship for Ford. Tons are really watching American Idol so they can expect tons of people who will see and probably have an interest on this Fusion. It’s time for them to show off, not their singing skills, but their genuine ford parts.
