Car Design Competition Inspires Students

Nov 05 2008 by Sherrice Gilsbach

While perusing the exhibit floor at the recent Convergence 2008 automotive technology conference in Detroit, I noticed groups of pint-sized engineers cruising through the crowd. Upon closer inspection I realized that they weren’t engineers—at least not yet. They were high school students.

This year, 10 high schools attended the conference and entered the Convergence Education Foundation’s Innovative Vehicle Design competition. The foundation sponsors groups of high school students in the competition in hopes of inspiring the next generation of engineers. I was particularly pleased to see an all-girls group from Regina High School in South Euclid, Ohio.

This ambitious bunch of 18 pre-engineering students was the first all-girls team to take part in the competition. The Regina ladies developed a one-seat car that runs on two 12-volt batteries. For this project, safety was one of their top priorities, so their car didn’t start unless the five-point safety harness was buckled. Nice thinking, gals!

A couple of the girls on the Regina team told me that the experience convinced them to go into engineering as a career. Yay!

Upon returning home from the conference, I couldn’t get the Regina team out of my mind. I just had to know how they scored in the Innovative Vehicle Design competition. I’m proud to report that the Regina team earned first place in the Presentation category and second place in Ambassadorship. Go team! Go girls!
