Add Offroad Driving Lessons to Your Next Family Vacation
Nov 04 2008 by Sherrice Gilsbach
As you’re driving your wee ones about town in the family SUV, have you ever imagined what fun it would be to take that 4x4 off the perfectly maintained pavement and test its offroading capabilities?
The Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa., offers guests the opportunity to fulfill their offroading daydreams via an Off-Road Driving Academy. That’s right, at Nemacolin you can fill your day with golf, spa treatments, fine dining and an offroading course!
Guests enrolled in the program can use their own vehicles or choose from a fleet of Hummers and Toyota FJ Cruisers supplied by the resort.
Experienced instructors will drive you through the obstacle course before they let you take the wheel. The course is made up of boulders, steep inclines, water features and other fun obstacles that will amaze you. I took a trip around the course by myself in an FJ Cruiser and was floored by how stable the car was even in the most awkward positions, like balancing on the crest of a narrow hill or parking on a 45-degree incline. It really felt like the car should’ve tipped over.
In the end, you’ll have fun learning just how capable your family ride is, and you’ll definitely make some interesting vacation memories in the process.

Wow that pretty easy off-roading. Where are the Jeep Rubicons?
