The Kia Sorento fit in like one of the family at our house. It was a casual, no-frills kind of ride that we didn’t need to “front” for. It was also obviously hard-working, with its 4x4 capabilities and high ground clearance.

2009 Ford Escape XLT - 11/25/08
MSRP: $20,435 - $27,670 | MPG: 24 Hwy, 22 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
The 2009 Ford Escape is a tidy, simple SUV with few amenities. It knows you’re going elsewhere for the fun, but that you need a way to get there. And it does its job just fine.

2009 Subaru Forester - 9/11/08
MSRP: $21,195 - $27,895 | MPG: 23 Hwy, 20 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors

In the 2009 Forester, Subaru has made an effort to appeal to the granola-light consumer who wants to have as much convenience and style as possible in a car that delivers good gas mileage, value pricing and the ability to get out of the ’burbs at a moment’s notice.

The ’09 Toyota 4Runner is a testosterone-loaded, V-8, 4x4 super truck that just happens to work pretty well as a kid-hauler.

I’ve heard some industry insiders and journalists poke fun at the 2008 BMW X6 (a brand-new model this year). But I think the X6 is just misunderstood. Let me say that, for me, the X6 is a terrific blend of sports car and mom-mobile.

The 2008 Toyota RAV4 bugged me. It bugged me in the same way that the perfect-looking mom from my kids’ school bothers me. You might know her, she never leaves the house without her makeup on or her hair dried and styled.

I didn’t take the 2008 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE off-road, and I don’t feel bad about that because you wouldn’t take it off-road either. Oh sure, you might drive it over a slightly banked dirt road, but you’ll never take it into the wilderness.

Part of the fun of test-driving cars is they’re a mystery upon first encounter. But the 2008 BMW X3 is one car that I never completely figured out. So how’s a busy mom-on-the-go going to deal with this problem?

I’m a sucker for fuel-efficient, moderately-sized-yet-totally-spacious, attractive-looking cars. The 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid delivers on all fronts. That’s a good thing, because with high gas prices, a budget to stick to, a family, and lots of accessories, I need all the vehicular help I can get.

I’m relieved because I just figured something out. Jeep is getting better fuel efficiency from its SUVs with its turbo-diesel V-6 engine. In the past, I’ve likened its environmental efforts to my son’s feelings about any green vegetable — a strict, “no thanks, I’ll figure something else out” approach.
