2009 Toyota Land Cruiser - 8/28/09
MSRP: $64,755 - $64,755 | MPG: 18 Hwy, 13 CityDetails: 8 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
When I first got into the 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser, I was offended by its size. It’s enormous, and I thought it was a lot more room than I needed. But like a pair of baggy jeans, I found myself spreading out and growing into the Land Cruiser.
During my two-week test drive of the 2010 Nissan Armada, I liked almost everything about the full-size SUV. However, I’ll never buy one—not until its gas mileage improves. The Armada’s whoop-de-don’t fuel economy numbers are 12/18 mpg city/highway; they’re underwhelming, to say the least.
Kia is known for delivering a lot of car for a little price. When I jumped into the boxy cuteness of the 2009 Borrego, I was ready to be pleasantly surprised by its value-added price tag. Surprise! It’s not that much less expensive than many three-row SUVs. Bummer!

2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited - 7/21/09
MSRP: $34,700 - $41,020 | MPG: 25 Hwy, 27 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
The 2009 Highlander Hybrid is an SUV full of contradictions. After a week of hard use by my crack team of vehicular testers — aka my family — all the contradictions boiled down to one irrefutable truth: The HiHy (as we like to call it) is one great family-mobile.

2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid - 6/29/09
MSRP: $73,135 - $87,435 | MPG: 21 Hwy, 20 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 3 Latch Connectors
Don’t let the ginormous hybrid decals fool you; this behemoth is no planet-saver. After test-driving it for a week, I really can’t see what makes the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid so popular.
I’ve always had a crush on the Acura MDX, so getting a week to spend in it was kind of exciting. Of course, no fantasy turns out perfectly, and the reality of the MDX was somewhat less than perfect – as reality often is.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse - 4/20/09
MSRP: $29,215 - $41,975 | MPG: 23 Hwy, 17 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Just when you thought Detroit was being overrun by men in pinstriped suits, along comes Sue Wilson, the vehicle line director for the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. A modern mom of four, Sue knows what we want in a car, and she’s delivered (mostly).
The 2009 Land Rover LR3 is tall, thin and luxuriously appointed, but it lacks some of the typical kid-hauling SUV amenities of its competitors. It’ll go on safari in the African savanna with aplomb, but it suffers in the U.S. drive-through confines.

2009 Suzuki XL7 Luxury - 2/09/09
MSRP: $25,595 - $29,680 | MPG: 23 Hwy, 17 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Suzuki has a little more work to do. There are pieces of the XL7 that are quite impressive, but it’s lacking in areas like performance and safety.
Several of the 2009 Lexus GX 470’s features seem like a throwback to the ’80s. Yes, the GX has seats aplenty and luxuries galore, but there’s nowhere to put my mommy gear. Luxury is supposed to make things easier, right? Well, in the GX luxury seems a bit dated.
