The Toyota Venza was quiet, powerful, well-planned and didn’t scream mommy-mobile; it just might be my next new car—if I ever buy another car, that is. I fell in love with the Venza. I’d be lying if I said that, when the time came to let it go, I did so with a dry eye.
The oh-so-beautiful 2009 Buick Enclave has inspired me to create a new television series, “Extreme Makeover: Car Edition.” I’d love for some hunky host to relay my automotive sob-story to the masses, followed by the ultimate pulverization of my eight-year-old, 150,000-mile “piece.” At the end of the show, the bright, shiny Enclave would sit in my garage!
The 2009 XC70 oozes reassurance with its Volvo-ness. You don’t have to wonder whether you have the latest and greatest safety gadgets in this car (no wasted brainpower there). Plus, it wraps all that safety up in a very comfortable, accommodating wagon.
Several of the 2009 Lexus GX 470’s features seem like a throwback to the ’80s. Yes, the GX has seats aplenty and luxuries galore, but there’s nowhere to put my mommy gear. Luxury is supposed to make things easier, right? Well, in the GX luxury seems a bit dated.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 - 1/23/09
MSRP: $34,600 - $36,600 | MPG: 21 Hwy, 16 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Having never seen one on the road, I couldn’t wait to drive carpool in the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 in my Manolos (if only), turning heads all the way.
The 2009 Toyota Sienna had me assessing the value of my soul. You see, I’m ready to sell it to Toyota for a Sienna minivan. “But wait, Sara,” you say. “You swore you’d never even remotely consider a minivan. What happened?” You also may be calling me a hypocrite under your breath. Or out loud. Allow me to explain why.
I’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews of Mazda’s three-row crossover, the CX-9, so this mama was super excited to try it out. Well, I must be either hard to please or just plain dense, because I wasn’t blown away by the 2009 Mazda CX-9.

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee - 1/15/09
MSRP: $30,150 - $44,545 | MPG: 14 Hwy, 18 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
The Jeep Grand Cherokee easily provides ample room and comfort for a family of four without being too cumbersomely large. It’s comfortable and stylish without being obnoxiously overloaded, and it has a reassuring steadiness under the toughest road conditions.

2009 Mazda Tribute Hybrid - 1/14/09
MSRP: $19,730 - $27,635 | MPG: 24 Hwy, 22 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
This SUV gets the job done quietly and smoothly, and I don’t really have a negative thing to say about it. Which is not to say that I fell in love.

2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid - 1/09/09
MSRP: $30,090 - $31,840 | MPG: 27 Hwy, 34 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
My favorite new exterior feature in the 2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid is the capless fuel tank. It’s not a sexy choice, I know, but knowing that I can’t pull away from the pump with my gas cap on top of my car is somehow comforting to me.
