What pushes the 2009 Toyota RAV4 into chick-car territory is the fact that the SUV can be described as “cute” or “small.” Instantly, all masculine street cred is kicked to the adorable pink curb of chick-cardom.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse - 4/20/09
MSRP: $29,215 - $41,975 | MPG: 23 Hwy, 17 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Just when you thought Detroit was being overrun by men in pinstriped suits, along comes Sue Wilson, the vehicle line director for the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. A modern mom of four, Sue knows what we want in a car, and she’s delivered (mostly).
The 2009 Land Rover LR3 is tall, thin and luxuriously appointed, but it lacks some of the typical kid-hauling SUV amenities of its competitors. It’ll go on safari in the African savanna with aplomb, but it suffers in the U.S. drive-through confines.
As a solid four-wheel-drive pickup with plenty of room, great visibility and a fairly comfortable ride, the compact 2009 Suzuki Equator provides truck lovers with great usability at an affordable price.

2009 Subaru Tribeca Limited - 3/19/09
MSRP: $29,995 - $33,595 | MPG: 21 Hwy, 16 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
With a price tag on my test car of $36,081, the Tribeca left me feeling like I should get more for the money. This made me wonder why I should consider the Tribeca over its family-mobile competitors.
The 2009 Land Rover LR2 had me at hello. That’s not to say it didn’t have a few minor shortcomings, but my fondness for this SUV easily outweighed them and we had a splendid week together.

2009 Saturn Vue Hybrid - 2/24/09
MSRP: $28,160 - $28,160 | MPG: 32 Hwy, 25 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Did you know there are two versions of the Saturn Vue Hybrid? The test car I drove was the Vue mild hybrid (although you wouldn’t know that from the not-so-mild stickers plastered all over it).
A sedan isn’t usually what comes to mind when you think of a family car, but the 2009 Infiniti M35x could change that. It’s not only a great family car, it’s also a great hot-mama car, striking the perfect balance between practicality and luxury.

2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI - 2/11/09
MSRP: $24,590 - $24,590 | MPG: 29 Hwy, 22 CityDetails: 5 Seats, 2 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
I’ve always thought of the Volkswagen Jetta as a small starter car best suited for a single person. After test-driving the 2009 Jetta TDI, I can happily admit that I was wrong. This car is great for hauling around the family.

2009 Suzuki XL7 Luxury - 2/09/09
MSRP: $25,595 - $29,680 | MPG: 23 Hwy, 17 CityDetails: 7 Seats, 3 Rows, 2 Latch Connectors
Suzuki has a little more work to do. There are pieces of the XL7 that are quite impressive, but it’s lacking in areas like performance and safety.
