Safety
With all the SUVs on the road, driving around in a small car can make you worry a little about your safety. Honda addressed that with its Advanced Compatibility Engineering, which channels and absorbs the force from a front impact around the Fit’s passenger cabin, even against larger cars. Most cars are only crash-tested against similar-sized cars, but what are the chances you’ll collide with a car like the one you’re driving? Honda didn’t like those odds either, so it designed the Fit’s safety systems to take that into account. Nice.
Nearly all the Fit’s safety features are standard; I like that, because safety shouldn’t be optional. Those features include six airbags. We’re talking front-, side-impact and side curtain airbags for the front and rear seats. In a collision, I think the car’s interior would turn into a moon bounce. That’s the idea I get, anyway. The front seats also have active head restraints that help protect against whiplash injuries. The Fit comes standard with antilock brakes; an electronic stability system is available with the Navigation Package on Sport trims.
The Fit’s brakes worked well; they weren’t too grabby or too soft. I didn’t have any problems with blind spots in the Fit, thanks in part to small, triangular windows next to the side mirrors.
FAMILY LIFESTAGE
In Diapers: While a forward-facing infant-safety seat wouldn’t be a problem, a rear-facing infant seat would be a tight squeeze.
In School: Three kids fit comfortably in the backseat with no complaining. Really.
Teens: A great stereo package and even better safety features make this a great choice for new drivers.
