Interior
From the outside the Fit is tiny, but once inside I had absolutely no claustrophobic moments, even with a family of four. The new Fit is roomier and more flexible than the 2008 model. I invited a couple of mom-friends to climb in and check it out, and they couldn’t get over the Fit’s roomy interior. Even the backseat is comfortable for adults.
On carpool day, I put three second-grade boys in the backseat and there wasn’t one complaint. They had no problems hopping in and getting settled, and they buckled up without any confusion. The backseat is wide and flat, and it reclines, too. The Latch connectors are slightly hidden by the seat but not inaccessible. My 5-year-old’s booster seat sat nicely on the bench seat, and the firm seat belt receptacles made buckling up a simple affair. Unfortunately, the cupholders for the rear passengers are at the rear of the center console area. That’s no problem for adults, but little folks can’t reach them there.
The interior is both sportier and more luxurious than before. The paddle shifters gave me that racecar feeling and added a bit of fun to the drive. I played with the paddle shifters for about 10 minutes, then left them alone for the rest of my time with the Fit. I have enough to do while driving. New luxurious touches include a leather-wrapped gear shifter and steering wheel, which tilted and telescoped. Also, the stereo package has been upgraded to include cool stuff like an auxiliary input jack. My tester had an optional USB interface that let me play my iPod through the car’s stereo controls. I loved it because it let me control my music without looking away from the road, and it charged my iPod at the same time. There was even an optional navigation system.
The 2009 Fit’s cargo space is really flexible. The 60/40-split rear seats fold flat for extra cargo room. The rear seat cushions can also fold upward to give you room behind the front seats for taller items, like a kid’s bike, as well as easy access to all that junk that accumulates under the seats. Even with the kids in the backseat there was a ton of cargo space. The cargo area was roomy enough to hold a major grocery run, which was something I didn’t expect this car to do. I also popped a small bike with training wheels into the cargo area. I never thought I’d say it, but my life actually fits in the Fit.
