When I was test-driving the Fit, I got lots of positive comments in the carpool lane from people who usually wouldn’t look twice at a subcompact. It’s that cute. Despite its subcompact ways, the Fit was much roomier than I thought it would be from the outside. Its high ceiling left a solid 5 inches of space above my head; it’s a car that would easily accommodate all but the tallest of the tall. The doors opened wide enough to help a little one in, but not so wide that my kindergartener couldn’t close it from his booster seat.

From the front, the Fit is all about big headlights and a little grille. It manages to look like a car, not a face. That’s mostly because of its proportions; the Fit’s black grille is small and its headlights are set higher and off to the sides. The Fit looks sporty with its standard fog lights and a lower scoop.

Huge windows seem to wrap around the Fit, so everybody has a great view of the scenery. There is no chrome anywhere on this car. Instead, flat black trim provides contrast, while body-colored door handles and bumpers keep things looking sleek. The 16-inch alloy wheels on my test car were proportional to the rest of the car; they didn’t look like the bicycle tires you so often see on subcompacts.

The Fit is a hatchback, which is what creates so much room in the interior. The rear hatch opens easily and isn’t heavy. It opens high enough that I never once bumped my head, which is saying something in my case.
