Will New GM Hybrids Be Comeback Kids for SUVs?

Tahoe, Yukon May Be Worth Second Glance
GM has a big spread in Vogue Rocks, a supplement to Wired magazine, this month. In it, the company has various music stars promoting its vehicles, including Mary J. Blige partnered with the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. Apparently, the angle is, “She’s an award-winning artist, and a wife and mother as well. If you want it all too, the obvious vehicle choice is the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid — with all of the function you expect from an SUV along with increased efficiency.” Huh?! A Tahoe Hybrid? You heard me right, people. In the ad, Mary J. is all glammed up in a silver trench. Is that how I’ll look in the carpool lane if I get one? If so, please pass the Tahoe.
Many of us have considered a full-size SUV as an alternative to a minivan. While I really enjoy the cushy ride and endless interior real estate, I can’t handle the gas mileage; unfortunately, I don’t live on Mary’s budget (or lack thereof). Consequently, many of us have ruled out full-size SUVs. But what would happen if I were in the market for a new car now and learned that Chevy and GMC were making hybrid versions of their Tahoe and Yukon models? I’d give those trucks a serious second glance, is what — particularly if I had three or more kids and refused to get a minivan.
How many of you would consider a full-size SUV if it were a hybrid? We’re talking about SUVs that are 25 percent more fuel-efficient than the regular versions. The words I keep reading and hearing are “crossover-type fuel efficiency.” Could the Tahoe and Yukon hybrids be the comeback kids for the SUV market? Are these vehicles the new quintessential mom-mobiles? Hopefully we’ll get one in our hot little hands soon to give you our take. Until then, let us know your thoughts, particularly if you manage to get a test drive before we do.

Well, they have chance if the Hybrid Premium is not a big one. I would rather have a regular Tahoe and save a 6 grand premium for the Hyrid, but if it were only maybe 2 and 1/2 grand, it’d be a look.
