It’s a Common Term, But What Does it Mean?
Whenever I use the word “crossover,” it’s very common to get a blank stare in response. Like a trick knee, the blank stare alerts me to the question coming next: What is a crossover? Well, a crossover — also known as a CUV or XUV — is a vehicle with an SUV-like body on a sedan frame and drivetrain. True SUVs are built on truck platforms.
What, that didn’t clear it up for you? Here’s an example: The Nissan Murano looks like a small SUV, but the platform it’s built on is the same as the Altima. The Lexus RX is built on the same foundation as a Toyota Camry. Why do manufacturers do this? Well, with this formula you sit up a little higher, getting an SUV-like perspective of the road and SUV-like cargo space, but with a smoother ride and better gas mileage. Think of it as a comfy, supportive, efficient SUV wearing sedan underwear.
I have to say, though, that marketing departments everywhere are blurring the lines between SUVs and crossovers. Some just use size as the criteria, while others use visual criteria. Some call small, wagonlike SUVs “crossovers” to avoid SUV or station wagon stigma. So if you’re looking for a genuine crossover, just make sure it’s wearing the right underwear.

Why does the Murano look like something “ET” would get out of? And whats with the oversized tires?
And if I am not mistaken, the Toyota RAV4 was the one that started this trend.
