Video Tips: Features to Look for in a Car

Dec 11 2007 by Kristin Varela

When you’re looking for a new car, make sure you take these things into consideration before you make your final choice.

Safety

  • Check NHTSA and IIHS crash-test ratings
  • Locate and understand airbag placement in the car
  • Does it have antilock brakes/stability control/a tire pressure monitoring system?
  • How about a backup camera or sensors?
  • Is there pinch protection on the automatic doors, windows and/or tailgate?

Storage/cargo

  • Does the cargo space fit the stuff you need to haul regularly?
  • Are there a variety of compartments to keep your car tidy and organized?
  • Is the center console large enough to store your purse or day bag?
  • Are there storage compartments and/or cupholders within reach of little ones while buckled?

Ease of entry and exit

  • Is the step-in height low enough for younger and older family members to get in and out easily?
  • Can you easily lift your infant carrier or child up into the car without straining or bumping your head (or theirs)?
  • Are the Latch connectors easy to access and use?
  • Are the seat belts easy for older children to buckle on their own?

Simple driver controls

  • Are there audio controls on the steering wheel?
  • Are there thermostat controls on the steering wheel? If not, are the center ones simple to use upon quick glance?

Fluff

  • Leather or stain-resistant fabric seats (such as Chrysler’s) are a necessity for families.
  • Does the car have heated seats or a remote start function if you live in a cold climate? (Great for warming up prior to loading children.)
  • Does the car have a rear DVD/entertainment system?
  • Is satellite radio available?
  • Is there an auxiliary iPod (or other MP3 player) jack?
  • Is the navigation system simple to operate?
  • Are there plenty of power outlets to plug in the kids’ accessories?

The car is intelligently designed and very eye appealing.  I was dissapointed to find that I had to choose from a myriad of options.  Who has time to research all of them?  Bad marketing idea.
