Study Finds Women Need to Brush Up on Car Care
Nov 03 2009 by Courtney Messenbaugh
Nearly nine out of 10 female motorists are at least somewhat involved in the decision-making process for their family car’s maintenance and repair, according to a study by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association. Well, duh. Women are in charge.
However, another recent study, this one done by Jiffy Lube International — that’s right, those famously academic oil-changing literati — found that we women may not know quite as much as we think we do about car care.
The Jiffy Lube study found:
• 35 percent of women wrongfully believe that balancing the weight of the people riding in your car will help your tires last longer.
• 28 percent erroneously thought that using premium gas all of the time makes your car run better.
• Only 33 percent of women could identify the serpentine belt versus 77 percent of men. (The serpentine belt, aka the V belt, controls all accessories, power steering, air conditioning and various pumps.).
• Only 63 percent of women could point out the engine air filter (compared to 90 percent of men).
Are women really that dumb when it comes to their cars or did Jiffy Lube ask the wrong women for their study? Ladies, we want to hear from you. Who knows the most about cars in your household? Tell us in the comment section below.

my husband is an electronics nut - far from the car nut.
We are expecting and I have been the one doing all the research on the type of vehicle we will be buying and I will be making the decision.
So my opinoin - Jiffy lube asked the wrong girls - fyi - i never take my car there !! I use a regular mechanic, I trust.
Another note - I remind my husban when to get his oil change and when he needs to put air in his tires - lol.

i think the “premium” gas myth is propagated by the big companies—what proportion of men think so too i wonder?
