School Promotes Carpooling, Going Green
Oct 20 2008 by Lori Hindman
A program at my kids’ school encourages families to walk, bike or carpool to school with Make a Difference Mondays. Ah, carpooling, it’s both a savior and a royal pain, depending on whether it’s my day to drive or not.
Every Monday, my kids’ school opens a second drop-off area that’s just for carpoolers, who are hauling a bunch of kids. It’s our very own carpool lane, and it’s separate from the usual drop-off line. As if that wasn’t enough, the PTA gives away cool prizes to the Make a Difference Monday participants. It’s all part of the school’s Going Green theme for the year, and I kind of like the idea. Along with the ubiquitous blue recycling bins, the program makes the kids aware that little things really do make a difference. Anyway, prizes never hurt anyone. And as complicated as driving around with little kids can be, I know that it’s the right thing to do. It helps ease traffic and pollution, provides socialization time for my kids and best of all, allows me to spread my stress around the neighborhood.
I’m wondering if any other schools have similar programs. What does your community do to encourage a greener tomorrow?

Wow! You must have some dedicated parent volunteers at your school Lori - Kuddos! At our elementary school we have more inside the building projects like a full recycling program, reusable lunch trays, and each class “adopts-a-park” in the area and they regularly clean it up and plant new trees each spring. Here’s to doing the right thing - Cheers!
