Postal Service Works to Keep Kids Safe Around its Trucks
Oct 09 2008 by Courtney Messenbaugh
My son is obsessed with trucks of all kinds, including mail trucks. The U.S. Postal Service recently launched a child-safety campaign urging kids to “stay away from the truck.” This is needed because at my house it takes every ounce of my strength to prevent my son from running into the street to greet our postal worker and his truck.
It might seem like loopy logic to you, but thank goodness I’m not the only one whose child is so obsessed. The Postal Service’s campaign uses the animated duo of Franklin the eagle and Benny the bird to warn preschoolers through second-graders about the dangers of running around Postal Service delivery trucks. These feathered friends let kids know that mail-carrying trucks could actually harm them.
Greg Frey, a manager of corporate communications for the U.S. Postal Service, told me that school officials can contact their local postmaster to arrange to have a postal employee talk to the children. The presentation includes a short animated video “Smart Children Stay Away From the Truck,” which is available in English or Spanish, coloring books and stickers. While I haven’t yet seen this opus, the message is apparently reinforced in numerous and humorous ways throughout the video.
Although my tot isn’t of school age, I’m going to try and get my hands on some of the child-safety materials. It’s never too early to start teaching safety lessons.
