Mercedes-Benz Showcases Eco-Friendly Cars, Clothes

Oct 30 2008 by Lori Hindman

Mercedes-Benz is a sponsor of some of the biggest, glitziest, star-studded-iest fashion galas in the U.S. This year, the automaker put a green twist on one of its fashion shows by pairing an environmentally friendly clothing line with its own line of clean-burning diesel cars, called Bluetec.

The automaker highlighted its Bluetec cars and the Eco-Ganik clothing line at a recent Mercedes-Benz-sponsored Fashion Week event in Los Angeles. As you might have guessed by its name, Eco-Ganik is eco-friendly. It’s based in Los Angeles and committed to the “hip, carefree, eco-conscious lifestyle of its consumers,” according to its website. The company uses low-impact dyes and natural materials like wood and shell to make its clothes beautiful and environmentally friendly. Eco-Ganik is also an active member of the Organic Trade Association. Who knew fashion could be so eco-friendly?

At the runway show, I noticed that Eco-Ganik is mom-friendly, too. The clothes aren’t the outrageous stuff you see in the fashion magazines, but simple, wearable jersey-knit tunics and dresses, woven tops and, wait for it, jeans. Everything in the spring 2009 line is flowing, feminine and way better-looking than the workout clothes I’ve been running around in. There’s a fabulous white-lace shirt that I’ll be dreaming about for a while.

So thank you, Mercedes-Benz. Not only have you brought us a clean-burning diesel engine, you’ve helped us look great while saving the planet, one carpool at a time.
