Foundation Offers $10 Million for 100 MPG

Contest’s Real Winners Will Be Drivers
The X Prize Foundation, which awards cash prizes for innovative, successful technological leaps, recently expanded to include advancements in the automotive industry. That’s good news for us, because the $10 million prize will have all kinds of creative, innovative people (maybe even your “Desperate Housewives” viewing party, natch) working to create a super fuel-efficient car that people will want to buy.
The goal is a vehicle that gets 100 mpg, has low emissions, meets safety regulations in the U.S. and can be produced at a rate of 10,000 per year. I assume, too, that part of the idea is to see all the innovations that will happen along the way.
The kicker in creating a car like this is the “people will want to buy” part, but with gas prices soaring, I’m sure people will find themselves more willing than ever to consider a car like this. Good luck to all teams, though I think that, ultimately, consumers will be the real winners.
