Does Your Car Seat Fit?
Aug 07 2007 by Sara Lacey

We Need Your Input
One of the more common inquiries we get here at Mother Proof is whether someone’s gaggle of car seats will fit in a particular car. This is a tricky one, not just because seats in cars have different dimensions. If all we needed was a standard measurement, this would be easy. But we all know that just because a car’s backseat might have the minimum number of inches, in theory, for your car seats, there are likely issues with the shape of the car’s seat or the placement of Latch connectors and buckles. Car seats may fit, but your little one may not be able to buckle her booster seat belt by herself. This can be a big problem when your child has been doing this on her own and now has to rely on you to help them. It’s no fun for you, either. Add in a booster seat’s cupholders, or other factors and this question becomes difficult to answer in a straightforward way.
What can we do instead? In our reviews, we try to incorporate info about whether child car seats fit, and whether more than one can be used. In addition, we give an assessment of the third row, when applicable. Still, a list of exactly which car seats will fit in a particular vehicle in which configuration is a daunting, perhaps impossible task. In an effort to assist our dear readers with this problem, we figured the best thing to do is to have you help each other out. If you have a minute (funny joke, I know), please post in the comments below your the number and brand of car seats in your car, SUV or minivan, and how well they fit. That way, we can all share our knowledge and help accomplish this mountainous task. Power to the people!
I’ll start (feel free to copy and paste if it makes your life easier): I drive a 2006 Nissan Murano. I can fit a Britax Marathon car seat behind the driver’s seat. Behind the passenger’s seat is a Graco TurboBooster. I can fit another booster in between the two but have no chance at squeezing in an infant seat or convertible seat. I probably wouldn’t want to squish a third bambino in there every day, but it does really well for the occasional outing with my kid’s friend. Now it’s your turn!

I have three (yes, really) Britax Marathons in my 2005 Acura MDX. They are LATCH, and fit snugly, but reasonably. Two can also fit in the third row pop-up seats, but only with seat belts. No LATCH system there.
I’ve also fit two of the Britax marathons with a Peg Perego infant seat with no problem.
I have a Nissan Quest and have 2 Britax Marathons in the 2 front captains chairs. I have a 2 and 3 yo in them and they can’t mess with each other and they can’t kick the seats! I have also had the 2 seats in the 3rd row with room for someone to sit in the middle. this van has a ton of room.
I am looking to buy a car that will fit a rear facing car seat. The last new car we purchased was a Saturn Ion sedan - prior to the baby being born. You could not fit a rear facing baby seat behind either the driver or passenger side and allow the seat in front to be used. Until we could turn the seat around, I had to sit in back with the baby while my husband drove. I’m not making that mistake again.
I have a Ford Freestyle (Taurus X) and I have two Graco Turbo Boosters (with back) that fit great in the center row with the seats just slightly reclined. In the third row I need to remove the headrest for proper fit, but otherwise they are great. I also used to fit a Britax Roundabout in this car (forward facing) with a swim noodle at the crack and the seat slightly reclined as well.
Hey I used to own a 93 subaru legacy wagon. Loved it. It was great with the kids. I have used different kinds of carseats. But the one I like the best is called an Alpha Omega, it is great in the rear facing and forward as well. I also have a graco toddler seat as well, it is the first seat I have had with the latch system for kids. I love the newest one for my kids now. It is called an Alpha Apex, it goes up to 65 punds in a harness. Good for the taller children. I love these seats. I am planning on getting another one in the next year or so.
Thanks for listening to my story.
Help! Does anyone have an acura 2005 and two toddler seats and an infant seat? I have 2 britax boulevards and don’t think I can fit infant seat in there. I’ve tried peg perego and graco snugride and neither work. Thanks for any input!

i had a saturn ion, and easily fit a graco snugride and graco safeseat step 2 in the back. we got rid of our ion (not by choice) and are getting another one this week, and plan to use it with 3 kids as we want to have our next baby soon. i never had a problem with the carseats fitting.
Just went looking for a new vehicle. Having twins and our Saturn Ian coupe cannot fit two ( or one for that matter) rear facing infant car seat..Graco Snug Ride.
After shopping for wagons - ford Taurus X and the new Flex we found that the car seat will not fit in these vehicles either!! the rear facing seats touch the drivers and passengers seats…..Are we supposed to recline the second row slightly..or just buy a minivan??
3 Britax Marathons across the back of my 2001 Volvo S80 - they WILL fit. Replaced the Volvo with a 2007 Acura MDX where I installed 1 Britax Marathon and 2 Graco Turboboosters. I could imagine putting 3 Britax Marathons across the 2nd row and 2 boosters in the 3rd row if it ever came to that!
Oh, and at one point I had a rear facing Graco seat, front facing Britax Marathon, and Graco Turbobooster across the back of the 01 Volvo S80.
hi-i have 5 kids under 5 and i am trying to figure out a way to fit all their car seats in my 08 hondy odyssey!! i (think) i have tried every way…but open to everything anyone has to offer. we currently have 2 on the 3rd row in britax marathon and 3 in the 2nd row in 2 graco boosters and a RF graco snugrider…which he is out growing and will go in a RF britax roundabout or marathon…has anyone ever put 3 across in 3rd row..i need space in the 2rd row just to have the room to get back to the 3rd…HELP!!
We own a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder and cannot fit rear facing car seats (Graco Snugride) in the 3rd row. The seat isn’t deep enough to accomodate the car seat, and since the 2nd row doesn’t move forward enough, the car seat is too long.
We have a 2001 Volvo V40 and a 2003 Toyota Matrix. We used a Evenflo Embrace 5 for our first child - placed in the center. However, we are now expecting our second and the seat will not fit behind either front seat without sliding the seat all the way forward! We are now trying to decide if we have to get a new car. Ideas?!!
I am looking for a car with 3 latch positions in the center row - does anyone know if the honda pilot has three pair of latches? I have three Britax Frontier car seats - oy!
We have a 2008 Pilot and it only has two latches in the second row. I checked out the 2009 and 2010 Pilot and discovered that it has three in the second row. We wish we would have got the 2009 since #3 is on the way!
i have a 2009 Audi A4 and cant find a convertable carseat where the latch system will work..the problem i keep encountering is the straps for the latch system are not long enough for with the seat rear facing..Help!!!
Hello. I have a Honda Element and was wondering if anyone knows which carseat fits best? My 8 month old is ready to move out of his travel system. My concern is what carseat works in an Element?
I have an Audi A4 2010 the peg perego rear facing fits pretty well
I have a 2008 Acura MDX and just purchased the Britax Advocate CS for my 8 month old. We took it to the fire station for rear facing installation and now we can’t use the passanger side front seat. Has anyone else run into this problem? Do we really have to ride one in the back seat until we turn the seat around? I knew the seat was big, but the MDX isn’t a small car so I wrongly assumed it would fit just fine. The guy who installed it said it wouldn’t work in the middle…since the Boulevard is basically the same seat as the Advocate, does anyone with either of these seats and a MDX successfully use it in the rear facing position? I’m sick of chaueffering my husband ![]()
In the second row of my 2005 Ford Expedition, I currently have a front-facing Britax Boulevard, a rear-facing Graco Snugride with base (center)and a Britax Frontier. I have latch in all three positions in the second row, but none in the third row seat. Only the center position of the back seat is carseat compatible and only with a seatbelt. I would like to purchase another Boulevard for our youngest. Has anyone managed to fit two Boulevards and a Fronier in the same seat?
I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima with 3 in the back seat. 1 rear facing Sunshine Kids Radian 80 behind the passenger seat, 1 forward facing Radian 80 behind the drivers seat (both installed with the latch) and a graco snugride in the middle with seat belt installation. The Radians have a very slim profile.

I’ve got two Britax Decathlon convertibles, both forward facing. One is in my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center position using the LATCH anchors. The Decathlon didn’t fit on either side forward facing as the rake of the seat combined with the relatively low height of the non-adjusting head rests didn’t allow it to sit level at all. When we used it rear facing it fit fine in the side positions but it severely limited adjustment of the front seats.
The other seat is mounted in my husband’s 2003 Honda Accord. The cavernous back seat has been able to comfortably take this ginormous seat in rear and forward facing with ease. I suspect every single seat on the market will fit in this car with ease.
Overall though I am kind of lukewarm now on these beastly seats after having to hoist a squirmy 24 lb. toddler into them numerous times every day. The seats sit very high, which gives the little dude a great view of what’s going on, but my back isn’t going to take much more. On the plus side, they’re extremely cushy and my guy falls asleep in them easily.
And by the way, I recently found this site which attempts to resolve this problem: http://www.carseatdata.org/ It’s very much incomplete as it depends on reader submitted reviews, but it’s a big start.
