Best Buy Selling Small Electric Vehicles
Aug 13 2009 by Courtney Messenbaugh
Everyone has an image of what they think mom-mobiles are and should be, but in reality moms are driving some cool and different vehicles these days. And Best Buy, most often thought of as a big-box store that sells all sorts of electronics, is branching out into the cutting edge of environmental friendliness as it begins to sell green vehicles.
Best Buy has started selling electric scooters, power-assisted bicycles and the electric two-wheeled wonder, the Segway, at a handful of locations in California, Oregon and Washington. These aren’t the typical mom-mobiles, but who says a small electric vehicle couldn’t be a mom’s preferred mode of transportation when she’s going solo? Our Chief Mama says that several of her neighborhood moms ride gas-powered Vespas in style when they’re kid-free, mostly to run small errands.
Best Buy is reportedly going to sell the Brammo Enertia, an electric motorcycle with a top speed of 55 mph and a 50-mile range; it costs $11,995. The Enertia looks like a blast from the future, and I bet motorcycle-loving celebs such as Brad Pitt and George Clooney will be riding one soon. At that price, only celebs (or moms who want to live like one) will be scooping them up.
As gas prices fluctuate, Best Buy’s move into electric vehicles could be a smart gamble. Perhaps the retailer will one day sell a smart electric vehicle for a small family that would be like a smart home entertainment system. With the push of a button, the EV would have your favorite music playing at just the right volume level, adjust the temperature as needed and tend to your fussy baby. Throw in a coffee made to my liking, and I’m sold!
