Sensors Help Drivers Back Out of Parking Spaces

Nov 17 2008 by Sherrice Gilsbach

We’ve all been through it: You return from shopping to find your car lost in the shadows of two large SUVs parked on either side of it. As you slowly back out of the parking space, you turn your head frantically from side to side trying to catch a glimpse of something, anything that might be behind you. But Rear Cross Path technology, which alerts you when cars are approaching your car as you back out of a parking space, can help eliminate these fright-filled moments.

Radar sensors on the sides of the car’s rear bumper detect oncoming cars that might be blocked from the driver’s view, said Joe Attard, of automotive supplier Visteon, at Convergence 2008, an automotive technology conference recently held in Detroit. An icon in the side mirror and an alarm alert the driver to an approaching car. Sweet! No sweat!

Rear Cross Path technology is different from parking sensors. Parking sensors alert the driver to objects that are directly behind the car; as your backing your car up, Rear Cross Path technology warns you about an approaching car that’s about to cross your path.

This technology is available in the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country. Car technology is advancing so quickly that this feature could someday make its way onto the “standard” side of the features’ list (just as I’m hopeful that putting down the toilet seat makes it onto the standard list for my boys).
