Travel Seat: Safety First Tote ‘n Go DX

Mar 31 2007 by Kristin Varela

Finally a Solution!

Tested: 3/19/2006 to 3/31/2006

ToteNGo

Mother Proof was born out of my need for a new family car that would fit a third child safety seat in the middle for carpooling. I was about to spend more than $30,000 on a new car for this reason alone.

Is there really no other way?

Well, listen up! I’ve found the perfect solution for families needing to squeeze a third child in that tiny center rear seat between two gargantuan car seats: The Safety First Tote ‘N Go DX.

This portable car seat converts lap or shoulder seatbelts into a five-point harness for children from 25 to 40 pounds. Weighing in at less than 4 pounds, the Tote ‘N Go can also be packed in a suitcase for taxi or rental-car use. That’s right, no more hauling that car seat through the airport just to use while on vacation (although the Tote ‘N Go is not approved for airplane usage).

The Tote ‘N Go may very well be God’s gift to parents (it might even make up for the fact that we’re no longer automatically entitled to daily showers). No longer must I contort myself, risking life and limb, to squeeze carpoolers’ seats in the back of too-small test cars. This little gadget attaches fairly simply with any seatbelt. Adjusting the harness straps must be done beforehand, and can be a bit tiresome for all involved, but once that’s done, this is a lifesaver.

I wouldn’t use the Tote ‘N Go for long trips, as my daughter complains that it isn’t comfortable. For the six-mile ride from home to school and back, a bit of discomfort is worth the $30,000 in savings from not buying that new car.

I am looking for this type of seat as a extra seat while DH is at work and we have a play date and need a seat. So far your price is the best around.

Except. . .the seat is an absolute safety nightmare and is completely insufficient to protect a child in the event of a collision.  No head protection or side impact protection whatsoever.  Is horrible to install and should not be used in any event, whether a short drive or long one.  Accidents happen most often close to home.

Eddie Bauer also carries a portable car seat through costco.

Has anyone found the Eddie Bauer or the Safety 1st? I’m searching and they seem to no longer be available. We are traveling in a month and am looking for something portable to put in taxis.

the safety 1st tote n go dx, is no longer available. and may not be again as per amazon.com. however, this seat is not easily used for short taxi rides. the provide seat belt lock-buckle needs to be used to ensure a tight fit.

I am interested in your seat that you never used as well. How much are you asking for it? Thanks!

Does anyone have instructions/manual on how to use/install the Tote n Go? I have one purchased in Japan but do not have the instructions in English (especially for tightening the vest against the seat so that it does not move forward).
Thank you for your help! If you can email a scanned copy, that would be great!!
