Sprout Shell Makes Life on the Go Easy on Mom, Baby
Jul 30 2009 by Courtney Messenbaugh
Whenever another new baby product hits the market promising to be all things to all people, I’m skeptical. The Sprout Shell is one such product. It purports to be an infant-safety seat cover, a nursing cover and a shopping cart cover all in one stylish piece of cloth.
Needless to say, I entered into this review with a skeptically raised eyebrow. After giving it a whirl, however, I can tell you that Sprout Shell really can do all that it claims to do, and it does it effectively and stylishly.
I’ve tested many car-seat covers since life in the car is what we’re all about here at MotherProof.com. I’ve even found one that I like. However, the Sprout Shell has quickly become my favorite car-seat cover.
It beats the competition on many levels. The Sprout Shell comes in a variety of adorable and chic fabrics; the competition usually comes in only a handful of solid colors, total dullsville. It’s 100 percent cotton and is lightweight enough to stuff into a diaper bag while other covers are bulky and a troublesome combination of cotton and synthetics.
Perhaps you’re thinking, “But a sheet of cotton won’t keep my baby warm.” Don’t be fooled by its lightweight facade because it still keeps your baby warm. The coup de grace is that its over-the-handle design creates a small, toasty haven for your baby. It fully protects her from the elements, be it the weather or annoying people who would wake your precious one were it not for her newfound Sprout protection. Finally, the Sprout Shell will fit over any infant carrier without a struggle and within seconds.
That you can also use the Sprout Shell as a nursing cover and a shopping cart cover are great bonuses. While I’m not one to normally use shopping cart covers — I firmly believe in exposing my kids to a few germs — if you’re of that set then the Sprout Shell is a dream. Here again, it’s cuter than the competition and easily fits on the cart.
I am, however, a big fan of nursing covers since I don’t make it a practice to flash the general public when I’m breast-feeding. The Sprout Shell looks good, provides ample coverage and the elastic at the bottom provides a little support for your wee one, too. It’s a win-win-win product.
The Sprout Shell costs $35-$50 and is available in 10 different fabrics. For more information, go to sproutshell.com.
