SleepyPod Keeps Pets Safe, Stylish in Car

May 14 2009 by Kristin Varela

At the 2009 Chicago auto show, my favorite press conference was the Safest Pet Vehicle Awards from Bark Buckle Up. I loved seeing the cute dogs, of course! However, the pocket pooches lounging luxuriously in SleepyPod mobile pet beds really caught my eye. This super-lux tote makes it easy to keep your furry loved ones comfy and safe at home, in the car and on the plane.

Pets need to be buckled up when they’re riding in the car. That keeps them from flying through the windshield during collisions, and it also helps protect first-responders. If you get into a collision, a properly restrained dog won’t keep emergency personnel from safely reaching you; the dog also won’t be able to jump out of the car and run into traffic, causing further accidents.

I had to try one of these safe and stylish SleepyPods for my own pooch, Kimba, a 3-year-old havanese. The SleepyPod’s base can be used solo as a bed at home. It sports a fluffy interior and an optional low-grade heating pad to keep the most delicate pups perfectly toasty. Kimba loved it!

The trouble started when I zipped on the SleepyPod’s mesh top before attempting to buckle Kimba into the car for a carpool run. Apparently Kimba has a slight case of claustrophobia and wanted nothing to do with the SleepyPod in its mobile mode. Other less neurotic or spoiled pets should be fine in the SleepyPod. It’s easy to buckle the SleepyPod into place; the lap belt goes around the carrier’s base, and the shoulder strap is secured under its handle.

The SleepyPod can carry cats that weigh up to 15 pounds and dogs that weigh no more than 12.5 pounds; the SleepyPod Mini can carry cats weighing 7 pounds or less and dogs with a weight of 5.5 pounds or less. The SleepyPod costs $165; the SleepyPod Mini costs $149.50. The optional warmer costs $59.50 and comes with a 12-volt car adapter plug in addition to the wall adapter.

For a mobile pet bed that not only functions well but looks hip, give the SleepyPod a try.
