iPhone Application Puts Car-Repair Info In Hand

Mar 12 2009 by Emily Hansen

I dread taking my car in for repairs because I feel like I have a giant sticker on my forehead that reads, “Be sure to charge me for something I don’t need.” I know most repair shops are honest, but I’ve learned that it’s best to be prepared. With the RepairPal iPhone application, I’m ready for my next trip to the repair shop.

RepairPal for the iPhone is a companion to the RepairPal website, which provides independent repair estimates. The application offers a wealth of information that makes searching for a reputable repair shop much easier.

The iPhone application has three main functions: Get Estimate, Find a Shop and Assistance. Find a Shop uses the iPhone’s GPS to search by current location or typed destination. Entering a key word (hint: try the make of your car) refines the search, and, finally, there’s a how-far-am-I-willing-to-look option. The results are rated, and clicking on any of them reveals more information about the shop. Once you’ve located a repair shop, ask RepairPal to give you a “ball-park” estimate of what you might spend for any given repair. The final section of the RepairPal application is a list of manufacturers’ emergency-assistance phone numbers.

The information provided in RepairPal is helpful and easy to use. If you’ve joined the iPhone faction, RepairPal is a worthwhile download that might just save you time in an emergency and give you peace of mind when a car repair is a little less urgent.

Hi Emily:

I work at Collision Concierge ( http://collisionconcierge.com ).  We’re on Repairpal and it really does very little what it says.  Let’s say you have 2 different repair facilities.  1 charges $100 for a tune-up and the other charges $125.  Which one is the better value?  We don’t know because we have no idea when it come to the skill level of each shop.  There needs to be is a directory solely based off of finding the best of the best facilities and then compare them. Not allow any shop which is what repairpal does.
